Speaking to a meeting of the Long Island Association Wednesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said $5.6 billion in upgrades will transform the Long Island Rail Road and help make up for decades of neglect. The work will involve laying 10 miles of new track to ease congestion along the busiest part of the rail road, along with the replacement of 20 miles of aging track. Stations will be renovated, parking will be added and signal switches and other equipment will be upgraded. (AP Photo/Kathy Willens)
The MTA Board approved multiple toll and fare increases that will go into effect starting on August 6th. The unanimous vote will provide a 4.3% fare increase for Metro-North and LIRR. Subways and busses will increase to $2.90. Those hoping to drive to avoid the hikes on the rails will have to pay a 5.5% increase using EZ Pass on tolls for the Whitestone Bridge and the Verrazano Bridge going into effect on August 20th.
