The governor has announced the launch of the New York Mobile ID
Officials say it’s a secure, digital way to present your driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver ID.
Here’s how you can get New York Mobile ID:
- Download the New York Mobile ID app from the App Store or through Google Play.
- Register the phone number of the device the Mobile ID will be on. An individual’s Mobile ID can only be on one device at a time to help protect their identity.
- Take a picture of the front and back of their physical ID, using their phone’s camera.
- Pose for a selfie. The app checks the photo and ID against information on file with the DMV to ensure you are who you say you are.
- Once your information is verified, your Mobile ID is active and ready to be used wherever it is accepted.
Currently, the New York Mobile ID is accepted at select TSA terminals at participating airports throughout the country. It can also be used at any other business, venue or organization that chooses to accept it including those in other states and countries.
As of now, you can only use the Mobile ID app at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy. You cannot use the app at MacArthur Airport on Long Island.
Officials say residents still need to bring their ID because only 30 airports nationwide have the feature.
Nationwide, similar apps are only accepted at 30 airports currently.
